Success Story

Cincinnati Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo aimed to lower operational costs and reduce its carbon footprint. With rising energy costs, the Zoo sought to stabilize its electricity expenses and set an example of environmental stewardship.

SOLAR SOLUTION:
In collaboration with Melink Solar, the Zoo expanded its solar capabilities by adding a 2.8 MW solar array to its Euclid Ave parking area. This array, along with an earlier 1.56 MW system, covers several acres of parking and produces enough energy to power approximately 330 homes annually. Combined, these arra

RESULT:
The Zoo expects to save $300,000 on electricity in the first year alone, while reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1,284 metric tons annually. These savings have allowed the Zoo to reinvest in its animal care and conservation programs, while extending the benefits of solar to underserved communities through the Zoo’s Community Solar Resiliency Program.

“This new array produces double the energy of our previous system, which is a testament to the advancements in solar technology. Not only are we powering our operations, but we’re also showing the community how solar can make a real difference,”

Mark Fisher
VP of Facilities & Sustainability at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Solar Legacy

“Solar technology, and our understanding of how to use it, have evolved dramatically since we erected our first solar array. This new array is a good example of that. It will occupy less physical space but will generate almost twice as much power as the current array. Once it’s online, two thirds of the Zoo’s electrical needs will come from our parking lots.”
