Success Story

West Virginia Wesleyan College Advances Its Sustainability Goals

West Virginia Wesleyan College has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey with the dedication of a new solar array. The project, developed in collaboration with Pickering Energy Solutions and supported by the USDA, is designed to provide 11% of the campus’s electricity needs, demonstrating the college’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental leadership.

SOLAR SOLUTIONS
The solar installation includes 1,328 bi-facial panels that generate energy from both sides, maximizing efficiency. Covering two acres, the system produces enough clean energy to power 63 homes annually and prevent the release of 727 tons of carbon dioxide each year. In addition to providing renewable energy, the solar array field is seeded with natural vegetation to support pollinators and encourage the growth of native grasses.

RESULT
This project when installed, was the largest solar installation in the First Energy/Mon Power system in West Virginia and marks a significant achievement for both the college and the community. With the support of a $380,000 USDA REAP grant, West Virginia Wesleyan College has demonstrated its dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and inspiring future leaders to embrace sustainable practices. This initiative highlights the college’s mission to lead by example in creating a greener future.

“We’re so thankful to Dr. Pickering, and the USDA, for the opportunity to be a part of a more sustainable world. It’s so important that we at Wesleyan lead by example and embrace alternative energy solutions, and I’m proud that we are able to be part of ensuring that these sorts of projects are advanced.”

Melink Solar Educational Partnerships

At Melink Solar, we recognize the growing importance of sustainability in educational institutions. With over a decade of experience, we have partnered with numerous colleges, universities, and K-12 schools, installing solar systems that reduce energy costs and serve as educational tools for students. Our collaborations have empowered these institutions to demonstrate leadership in renewable energy, inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

Invest in Solar, Invest in Education

Did you know that one in nine US K-12 students attend a school with solar panels? Investing in solar energy allows educational institutions to significantly reduce operational costs, which often rank second only to salaries and even exceed the cost of books and supplies. By harnessing the power of the sun, Ohio schools can lower their energy expenses and achieve a payback period of just 5-7 years. With schools across the state spending heavily on energy, this long-term investment ensures financial stability, enabling institutions to focus more on their educational mission.

Solar Power is Sustainable Education

Embracing solar energy demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices and environmental education. As of 2023, 1.8GW of solar has been installed at nearly 9,000 schools across the US. In Ohio, 105 out of 3,136 K-12 schools have already installed solar panels, leading the way for others to follow. By integrating solar solutions into your campus, you not only reduce your carbon footprint but also provide a living example of renewable energy’s potential. This initiative aligns with the growing demand for green campuses and prepares students to be responsible global citizens.

Greener Universities

“One attractive feature of working with Melink Solar is that Melink Solar involves our students in this project from the very beginning and on an ongoing basis. Our campus has quite intentionally become a giant sustainability lab where students from all majors can have a hand in many of our efforts to become a greener campus.”

Solar Energy for Student Engagement and Community Impact

Investing in solar energy is more than a financial decision; it’s a commitment to a sustainable future that resonates with students, parents, and faculty. As one school official said, “Energy-efficient design for schools can be a selling point in bond elections.” ALPHABET University’s solar installations have reduced costs and created a tangible symbol of their values. Solar energy initiatives can enhance your institution’s reputation, attract environmentally-conscious students, and provide educational opportunities highlighting renewable energy’s importance.

30% Federal Solar Incentive for Educational Institutions

Educational institutions qualify for a 30% Federal Solar Incentive, significantly lowering the upfront costs of solar installations. Additionally, financing options such as Energy Savings Performance Contracts and Lease-Purchase Programs allow schools to make energy improvements with little or no initial investment. These incentives make it easier for schools to transition to a sustainable future and achieve long-term financial savings.
